BRG vs NBRD
The opening bout of the Heartland Series South East division saw Norfolk Brawds Roller Derby proving they mean business this year with a solid victory over hosts Bedfordshire Roller Girls. In the second bout, Big Bucks’ High Rollers were welcomed to their first taste of Heartland competition by Hell’s Belles Roller Girls in an exciting nail-biting finish, with Big Bucks pipping the Belles to the post in the final minutes of a super exciting bout!

The Brawds took an early lead with Colletteral Damage and Philthy Delphia bringing home the first few points. In spite of Norfolk’s strong three skater walls, BRG’s Cherry Bomb was able to take advantage of a power jam and deliver a lead change, gliding seemingly effortlessly around the track, following a visit to the sin bin by Colletteral Damage. The Brawds drove home another lead change by gaining lead, jam after jam, until a BRG star pass saw Kookiekat take advantage of another power jam and reverse the scoreboard status once again. The end of the first half saw the Brawds play a cleaner game and stack up the points resulting in a strong lead at half time, going into the break leading 107 -61.

A penalty heavy second half saw most jams start with both teams light on the track. BRG played a strong defensive game, Killa Drumroll and Yoho holding back the Brawds for significant periods, but not strongly enough to stop jammers such as Yours Truly from scoring. She delivered an energetic performance fighting her way through strong defence for point after point, jam after jam. The Brawds played a stronger second half both offensively and defensively, retaining their ability to gain lead and recycling BRG’s jammers, with notable solid blocking skills from Teki Bomb, Kayos Feary and Penny Slain. They consistently retained the inside line but this didn’t always stop BRG’s Cherry from bombing round the outside to gain some much needed points.

Ultimately the Brawds played the stronger game, particularly in the second half, and won by a secure margin 231-111. With such a strong performance from the Brawds, the South East division is shaping up to provide some exciting bouts.

BBHR vs HBRG

Bout two saw Big Bucks gain an early lead in their debut Heartland appearance with jammers A-Cute Injury and Agent Sparling playing a confident and composed first half, steadily racking up more and more points than their opponents. The Belles’ jammers were also fighting hard for points but unable to gain as many lead jammer statuses as their opponents. As such too many jams saw the points just out of the grasp of jammers Dodge Her and Dolly Spartan, and while strong jammers, their toughness was not enough to hold back the relentless Big Bucks who scored more than double the number of points gained by the Belles in the first half of the match. Big Bucks went into the break leading 134 – 56.

The second half started with a power jam to the Belles, followed by another as the Big Bucks jammer returned to the track and was immediately penalised again. The Belles gained a much needed 30 points, Dolly sliding past Big Bucks’ three wall, despite some dedicated hitting from Miss Pain Marple and Lolly Chunders and paving the way for some exciting comeback play. Some awesome defense by the Belles saw them score 93 points to Big Bucks’ 9, resulting in a lead change and the game was now wide open. Some heavy hits and great offensive play from both teams ensued, resulting in but a late lead change to Big Bucks sealed a last jam victory 223 – 211.

The audience could not contain their excitement watching such a hard-fought for comeback from the Belles. They proved themselves very worthy opponents to the awesome High Rollers and created such an air of anticipation; the spectators simply cannot wait to see both of these teams in action again. Big Bucks find themselves in second place of the South East Division teams and will face the table leaders in April.

BRG hosted an exciting opening bout to the South East division, leaving all present wanting more and excited about the teams yet to play. The division is wide open and set to produce many more exciting and nail-biting bouts. Milton Keynes Roller Derby are preparing to host Bout Day 2 on Sunday 6th April when they will be playing the division’s other heartland debutants, the Bourne Bombshells and both of today’s winners will face each other – Norfolk Brawds v Big Bucks High Rollers
