We’re profiling all of the teams that will be competing in the Heartland Series 2014. We’ve asked them to highlight the skaters hoping to make an impression in the Series and tell us a bit about themselves, to introduce our new teams and welcome back our friends from 2013. Today’s stars, the hosts of the opening bout of this year’s Series, North Wales Roller Derby!

How was 2013?

North Wales Roller Derby is welcoming this year with open purple arms, excited to be a part of the Heartland Series 2014, in their debut in the Series!

2013 saw the Purps take part in three bouts, gaining experience and spreading their name across the UK, building in strength and tactical play as a team. NWRD Team Zebra and NSO have been busy up and down the country and Europe expanding their knowledge also, helping to bring back a realistic scrimming experience – and 2014 looks to be the year where NWRD pounce onto the UK Roller Derby scene, taking every opportunity possible to learn, improve and meet awesome people!

The Heartland Series has some fantastic up and coming teams contending in each division, and NWRD can’t wait to sink their teeth into all the Derby goodness – and to show off their own skaters who are bound to make an impression on skaters and audiences alike!

Jammer To Watch – Felicity Fearless

She’s fast. She’s agile. She’s our endurance queen – Felicity Fearless. You’d better watch those gaps, because this sneaky minny will flaunt any space you give her, and once she’s past you’d better have a rocket up your behind to catch up! She’ll jam until her skates give in but don’t think she’s a pushover in a wall, you’d be silly to think she’s a doddle to get past with her quick skills!

Blocker To Watch – Rhimorseless

You’ve gotten free of the wall, breathing a sigh of relief. Our advice – don’t look back, because you’ll see a flurry of purple in the shape of superblocker Rhimorseless hunting you down! This girl has hips to be reckoned with and a force not short of a ten ton bus hitting you if you are unfortunate to be in her path! And you probably will be, as this predator does NOT like letting Jammers through without a fight and will be out to smash your hopes of a scoring pass! Our resident bad guy, ‘Oooooh 667!’

Rookie To Watch – Mary Rottenz

And introducing our one to watch – Mary Rottenz. This was the girl who fell over, couldn’t do skills, hurt her backside and had more to work at than most people on the team. But my oh my, if ever there was an example of persistence and determination to succeed and improve and to show that YOU HAVE TO WORK FOR WHAT YOU WANT then this is our example! She continues to approach Derby with such positivity and has blown us all away with not only her drastic skill improvement but also by her awesome attitude. Rottenz used to be the skater who we would all think we could take – but now she takes us and my word we love it! She has tiny shoulders of death and gazelle like legs that will chase you and stop you and if she is on an assisting mission, then blockers, prepare for an unexpected faceplant. And we are incredibly proud to be finally showing her off to the world!

What are your hopes and goals for the Heartland Series for 2014?

This tournament isn’t going to be easy. It will test us and push us and teach us so much more than we have learned in the past. From this, we will grow and become an even stronger unit, and we can’t wait. Losses will show us where we can improve and victories will give us the confidence to know we are on the right track. And we will do it all as one team, meeting some fantastic people on the way and experiencing some of the best Derby the Series has to offer!

2014, you are ours!
